What is Solar Energy?

Solar energy harnesses the high intensity radiation of the sun’s rays and transforms it into heat. Solar energy is one of the most renewable sources of energy on earth, however, only a fraction of solar energy is used. The most common method of generating solar power is through the use of photovoltaic (PV) panels or concentrated solar power (CSP). Photovoltaics, or solar panels, convert solar radiation into direct current (DC) electricity through the use semiconductors. Concentrated solar power uses lenses or mirrors as well as tracking systems to focus the sun’s light, creating indirect electricity. Solar thermal energy is also an important facet of solar energy. Solar thermal converts the sun’s rays into heat to warm water that can be used in every day applications, such as potable water sources or radiant floor heating, or even to heat swimming pools.
